In 1985 ATV International Motocross Championship in sports competition started and today it is world famous event featuring many different race teams… Another event is the Championship Mud Racing…

There are not many vehicles which you can go with the maximum speed you want in any kind of terrain without paying much attention to holes or unevenness on the ground as if you are in the middle of an action movie. For people who are passionate about off-road, ATV’s have recently taken their place next to Jeeps and Motocross Motorcycles.

These vehicles, which can simply be said to resemble four wheel motorcycles, offer a better grip on the road in slower speeds with the extra two wheels added to their structure. ATV’s which can possess between 49-1000 cc engines are usually not permitted for traffic in countries like Australia, U.S.A. and Canada. However in some countries the use of these vehicles in traffic is allowed.

One of the most popular of the three wheel ATV’s was produced by Honda in 1970. These vehicles were used in the James Bond movie “Diamonds Are Forever” and they gained international attention. They became even more popular when more TV series started using these vehicles. This ATV used big tires which resembled balloons instead of mechanic suspension.

BAN ON THREE WHEEL ATV’S…

In 1987, the production of the three wheel ATV’s slowed down drastically. Their production was banned for 10 years; as the four wheel ATV’s were seen as more stable and safer vehicles. Since 1997, companies are free to produce three wheel ATV’s.

Suzuki was one of the leading brands in four wheel ATV production. Their QuadRunner LT125 vehicle in 1982 was a starting model. From 1984 to 1987, Suzuki also sold the first four wheel mini-ATV, LT50. In 1985, they introduced the first high performance ATV: LT250R QuadRacer. This vehicle was produced from 1985 to 1992. In 1986, Honda started producing 4×4 ATV’s. In 1987, Yamaha joined the race in high performance ATV’s with their Banshee 350 model. This vehicle was supported by twin cylinders, liquid cooling, two by two engine. Banshee was especially ideal for desert racers.

THE MARKET DOMINATED BY HONDA AND POLARIS

The models produced today are usually separated into two categories: Sports and Work models. The sports models are smaller and lighter. They can speed up faster and they have classic stick shift mechanism. They can go up to 130 km/s. The work models are heavier and can reach up to 110 km/s. As of today, Honda and Polaris dominate the sports and working ATV model industry. Both brands have different models in both categories. Especially the vehicles made by Honda are appreciated and market research indicates that Honda ATV owners believe that it is the most trustworthy brand in both sports and work categories.

Polaris ATV’s are among the most sold vehicles in the U.S. In safety and durability, the vehicles produced by this company are accepted as highly successful. Polaris produces vehicles which can be used in farms as well as sports competitions. Of course professional racers will choose ATV’s customized for best racing conditions, however it is pleasant to know that these ATV’s which you spend a lot of money on will offer you use in different fields.
