The quality that separates Swiss pocket knives from others is that it is a tool box that can fit in your pocket which makes it a miracle product in the world… Besides the pocket knife, there are the miniature versions of corkscrew, nail clippers, screwdriver, pen and many other tools inside this little box. Even in daily life, people carry these pocket knives in their pockets and bags.

In reality, the simplest of Swiss pocket knives have only the pocket knife inside. Of course we know this pocket knife with its practical pieces. Besides the main blade, there can be second and smaller blades, tweezers, toothpick, corkscrew, bottle cap opener, screwdriver, phillips-screwdriver, scissors, magnifier, pen, tongs and key chain inside the pocket knife case.

Swiss Pocket Knives owe their popularity in our country to the TV Show “MacGyver” starring Richard Dean Anderson…After a generation watched this show, they made their parents buy them fake, or original Swiss Pocket Knives. Of course the question of who used this aesthetic and practical design better can be argued. These pocket knives were created in Ibach, Switzerland in1891 when the company Karl Elsener, which would later be changed to Victorinox, took over the obligation from German producers to create army knives for the Swiss army. Another great pocket knife manufacturer called Wegner, formerly known with the name Paul Boéchat & Cie, was given the responsibility to produce pocket knives for the army in 1893 and the profit from the pocket knife industry was therefore split between these two companies. Up until 2005 when Victorinox bought Wenger, all the Swiss pocket knives were produced and sold by these two brands. Actually the name “Swiss pocket knife” was given from American soldiers who could not pronounce the original German word for it (Schweizer Offiziersmesser). As it is known, these pocket knives have one main blade and many side features. It is pretty obvious why MacGyver preferred these pocket knives which can have many practical uses from a can opener to a screwdriver!

VICTORINOX AND WENGER

Up until the year 1893 when Victorinox started making similar products, the French company Paul Boéchat & Cie, Victorinox remained a monopoly in Swiss Pocket Knives. This company was later bought by Theodore Wenger and its name changed to Wenger. Perhaps in order to end sectional segregation and lower prices by creating competition, the Swiss Army split the production in two. With a mutual agreement, Wenger started promoting its knives as “Genuine Swiss Army Knives” while Victorinox promoted its products as “Original Swiss Army Knives”. In 2005, Victorinox bought Wenger. This way, it became the only company to produce Swiss pocket knives once again, however the company declared that they will be producing knives under the brand Wenger as well as their original brand.
